Are you authentic or just saying the first crazy things that pop into your head? Do you filter yourself and why? Is it necessary to filter and is it inappropriate not to? What is the nature of the contents of our mind?
Some people certainly seem authentic. They are congruent. They say what they mean and don’t mess about. They don’t let what others may think change what they present or affect their values by hiding their truth with false words. They don’t filter themselves.
However, some people who don’t filter themselves may be doing so because they strongly identify with the first random judgments that pass through their mind, on anyone and any thing. It may be that they think they are their thoughts!
If we are our thoughts, we would likely be ashamed to say what we are, based on a lot of what passes through. And it could be problematic for ourselves and others.
Where is the line between authenticity/integrity and unwise/unkind action and words?
Maybe it’s to do with the level of awareness we have of our mental activity. This is certainly what mindfulness based practice is all about. That’s great, but I get the feeling it doesn’t go far enough. If we are willing to say that we can be mindful of our thoughts and motivations, detach from them and choose something wiser, then we have to address fully what all those unnecessary thoughts are, and what the filter is we use to discern good from bad.
For now. it’s interesting to think about. These matters will be addressed in further video contributions.
